As 2015 winds down, it is not unusual for people to look back on the previous 12 months and take stock of what has been accomplished. For local musician Steven James, there is much to reflect upon. The Corpus Christi-based singer, songwriter and guitarist took to the stage for countless gigs in the Coastal Bend for one well-received engagement after another. He also took his show on the road with his band, the Jaded, and was welcomed by highly enthusiastic crowds in Lubbock, Midland, Dallas and Fort Worth.
As consummate performers, it only made sense that Steven James & The Jaded would make the video for their new single ‘Weak In The Knees’ (from latest album ‘Baby LA’) a tour-based one. Filmed during their run of support shows for Texas artist Rich O’Toole, it comes off the back of a string of festival performances and follows fan favorite releases ‘Best of Your Love’ and ‘Go Down Slow’. Regional support has allowed the band to go from strength to strength, and despite only being released three weeks ago, the video looks like it’s going to become their biggest yet.
Steven James is a modern-day renaissance man. In addition to his day job as a marketing representative for a hospital system, he is also the lead singer, guitarist and songwriter for the local band known as the Shakedown.
The impressive trio of musicians has enjoyed a notable level of popularity, but last spring, James’ cohorts decided to amicably leave the band because their touring schedule was keeping them away from their young families. Undaunted, James viewed that unexpected change as an opportunity to reinvent himself as Steven James and the Jaded. As it turns out, the change is set to elevate him and his new band to even more success.
Steven James sat down with the team from South Texas Entertainment and Arts Magazine this month to talk about his summer tour, taking him to California and back, and why hotel rooms are some of his favorite places in the world to be. Steven James has spent much of the past decade building up an impressive reputation on the music scene in Southern America, being the figurehead for two highly successful rock bands. 2014 has seen two big changes for this native of Corpus Christi, Texas; firstly he has taken the opportunity presented by a hiatus for his band The Shake Down to make the transition to recording and performing as a solo act. Secondly, whilst still maintaining that rock sensibility, Steven has experimented with his musical style and embraced that Texas flavour to produce music with a healthy Country leaning.

A new semester means new artists to interview and new tacos to devour. I met with local musician Steven James for lunch at Taqueria Almeida. He shook my hand and gave me two copies of his self-titled CD with two new songs, “Best of Your Love” and “Go Down Slow.” Throughout my TWT career I’ve never been given a copy of the artist’s music so I immediately liked him.
The past decade has seen Steven James crisscrossing Texas and the South with his past two successful rock bands. Now, he's ready to strike out on his own.The young singer who often draws comparisons to Kings of Leon or Black Keys has teamed with acclaimed producer/engineer Lars Goransson, in Austin, who has produced international hit records from groups including The Cardigans; and some of Austin's music royalty including What Made Milwaukee Famous, Alpha Rev and members of Fastball.
